❚ 수일치란?

수일치란 주어와 동사의 수가 일치해야 한다는 기본 규칙이에요. 주어가 단수면 동사도 단수, 주어가 복수면 동사도 복수여야 자연스러운 문장이 되죠. 영어 문법에서 아주 기초적인 부분이지만, 수능에서는 긴 문장 안에 주어와 동사가 멀리 떨어져 있어 알아채기가 어려울 수 있어요.

 

 

 

 

❚ 수일치 예시

1. Be 동사

	단수		복수
1인칭	I	am, was	We	are, were
2인칭	You	are, were	You
3인칭	He, She, It…	is, was	They…

 

2. 일반동사

주어가 3인칭 단수일 경우, 동사는 has, does, 동사원형(e)s와 같은 형태를 취해요.

The man has a big dog.

The woman does yoga every morning.

The student studies hard.

The students in the classroom study hard.

※ in the classroom은 전치사구로 앞에 있는 명사 students를 수식해요. 주어 파트에서 수식어구를 제외한 명사 또는 대명사에 수일치를 시켜야 하므로, classroom(단수)이 아닌 students(복수)에 동사를 맞춥니다.

수능 영어 어법 문제에서 동사에 밑줄이 그어져 있다면, 체크 포인트는 아래와 같아요.

✅ 수식어구를 제외한 진짜 주어는 무엇일까?

✅ 단수동사를 취해야 하는 특별한 경우인가?

✅ 복수동사를 취해야 하는 특별한 경우인가?

 

🎯 단수동사를 취하는 경우

① each/every + 단수명사 + 단수동사

② the number of + 복수명사 + 단수동사

③ a series of + 복수명사 + 단수동사

 

🎯 복수동사를 취하는 경우

① a number of + 복수명사 + 복수동사

② people, cattle, the police 등의 집합명사 + 복수동사

※ 단, people이 ‘국민’이라는 뜻으로 쓰이면, 단일 집단의 의미로 단수동사를 취할 수 있어요.

 

🎯 상관접속사의 수일치

① both Ⓐ and Ⓑ + 복수동사

② not only Ⓐ but also Ⓑ (=Ⓑ as well as Ⓐ)

③ either Ⓐ or Ⓑ

④ neither Ⓐ nor Ⓑ

⑤ not Ⓐ but Ⓑ

⑥ Ⓐ or Ⓑ
